Sometimes, the lives we set out to save end up saving us.
Muddy Boots Horse Farm & Rescue was born during a season when life looked very different from what I had imagined. After walking through a difficult period filled with grief, trauma, and a crisis of faith, my family had finally settled onto what we believed would be our dream property. Surrounded by open fields and quiet trails, I hoped to find peace—but I never imagined it would begin at a horse auction.

There, I saw a frightened Appaloosa standing quietly among the other horses. He was painfully thin, sick, exhausted, and deeply mistrustful of people. Something about him captured my heart. I brought him home, not knowing how much healing lay ahead for both of us.
​
Apollo's recovery wasn't easy. It took weeks of rehabilitation just to restore his health and months before he learned to trust again. Day by day, we both discovered that healing rarely happens all at once—it grows through patience, consistency, and hope.
Today, Apollo is my heart horse. He's the one who greets me at the gate, carries me down the trails, and reminds me every day that brokenness doesn't have to be the end of the story.

In many ways, Apollo and I rescued each other.

His journey inspired another rescue...and then another. Before long, I found myself rehabilitating horses, helping them regain their health and confidence, and ultimately matching many of them with families who would love them for the rest of their lives.
​
As our grandchildren began homeschooling, the farm naturally became their classroom. They learned responsibility while feeding horses, science while caring for animals, and compassion through the stories of each rescue. And just like that, Muddy Boots became more than a rescue. It became a place where rescued horses could continue their healing by helping children discover confidence, compassion, responsibility, and a love of learning.

People often ask about the name Muddy Boots. The truth is, the name itself isn't what matters. What it represents is everything.

The Horse Who Changed Everything
When Apollo arrived at Muddy Boots, he was frightened, underweight, and in desperate need of care. His recovery took patience, trust, and countless small victories.
As Apollo healed, so did I.
What began as one rescue horse became a calling to rescue many more, creating a place where horses are given a second chance and children can experience the life-changing connection only horses can offer.
Apollo reminds us every day that healing is possible, hope can be restored, and every life has value.

Meet Heidi
People are often surprised to learn that I didn't ride my first horse until I was 50 years old. Horses weren't part of my childhood—they became part of my life's second chapter, and in many ways, they changed its direction forever.
​
I've been blessed to be married to my husband, Greg, since 1993. Together, we've raised five wonderful children and are now the proud grandparents of six amazing grandchildren, many of whom have inspired the educational programs we offer here at Muddy Boots. Watching our grandchildren learn, explore, and grow on the farm showed me just how powerful hands-on experiences with animals can be.
​
What began with one frightened Appaloosa named Apollo soon became a calling to rescue horses, help them heal, and create a place where both horses and people could find hope and purpose together.
​
Today, as the founder of Muddy Boots Horse Farm & Rescue and a PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL), I believe every horse deserves a second chance and every child deserves the opportunity to learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
​
Whether I'm caring for our rescue horses, leading the Homeschool Horse Rescue Academy, or facilitating equine-assisted learning sessions, my goal is simple: to create a place where horses and people can heal, grow, and discover their unique strengths.
​
Watching a frightened horse learn to trust again or seeing a child discover confidence for the first time reminds me every day why Muddy Boots exists.
​
I truly believe it's never too late for a new beginning. Horses taught me that healing takes patience, trust is earned one step at a time, and sometimes the path that changes your life is the one you never expected to take.
As a PATH Intl. Certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL), I am trained to facilitate equine-assisted learning experiences that help children build confidence, communication skills, emotional awareness, and resilience through hands-on interactions with horses. PATH Intl. sets the highest standards for safety, professionalism, and ethical practices in equine-assisted services, giving families confidence that their children are learning in a supportive and well-trained environment.
