Apollo was our first official rescue. We pulled him from the auction around 11pm on New Years Day 2024. He was one of the last horses to go through the sale ring, and definitely one of the sickest.
It took three cowboys with lassos and ropes to get him on the trailer, and when we got him home to the barn we realized how sick he was.
The vet came out the next day and he was diagnosed with Equine Flu, Pneumonia, severe dehydration, severe emaciation, and fever. He was a very, very sick horse. He was very anxious, very afraid, and a big bully.
Through the days, weeks, and months, Apollo and Heidi developed a strong bond. With the help of other experts, Heidi was able to gain Apollo's trust, his love, and he gained his confidence back. Apollo now does obstacle courses, loves to trail ride, loads and unloads on the trailer with no issues, love cookies and mints, and enjoys being loved. He is the first to greet Heidi at the barn every morning and evening. Apollo discovered the fig tree just outside the fence and when Heidi is gardening, he stands there waiting for figs.
Apollo still has a lot to learn and we really still don't know what he could do with the right training. But for now, Apollo loves his place at Muddy Boots Horse Farm and Rescue, and his person, Heidi.
